worst-case scenerio

So yeah, times are hard.

Haven't you talked about what you'll do if worse comes to worse?

We have.

If the company where Cliff is employed goes under, he's old enough to get social security.

Mine and his social security, added together, come to less than $2,000 per month.

There's a little bit in his 401K. Not much.

Our only major payment is the house payment, but taxes and insurance could bury us.

What would we do?

Probably sell our property and go to some old-folks, low income housing. Or maybe there would be enough cash from selling our place to buy a property in some small town. We'd keep the motorcycle. Blue might have to go. Sadie stays with us.

We have to be prepared for any occurrence. We'll survive.

I come from a long line of survivors.

  1. Yeah, it could happen. I can rent again, although I don't want to, and we can deal with what life deals to us. We've lived through some rough stuff. I am happy that I married a man who shares the same priorities that I have.

Well, I don't think it's a question of "if", more a question of "when".

House is paid for. Only significant debt is the truck, and they can come and get that any time.

Been stashing a little more in the savings/IRA/401K than in the past, and I'm going to get back into gardening this year (already ordered the seeds).

We could probably get by on my Navy retirement, but it'd be damn hard and we wouldn't have to worry about getting fat for sure.

I'm hoping things will hold together until I qualify for Social Security, but I wouldn't bet a plugged nickel on that even existing by the time I'm 62.5

We'll manage. It's my kids and grandkids that will be in deep, deep doo-doo.

  3. I could retire and get SS too. I would get less than you and Cliff as I'm just one person. When I do retire I'll just be existing and not much more. I've sat down and made a list as I want to quit working next year. Life will be much less stressful for me because I won't be able to afford to do much of anything. I'm sort of looking forward to it.

  4. It could happen. We have thought about it. taxes aren't so bad here. We do have a house payment for 6 more years. We could make it on his 401 until he reaches retirement but it will be no frills. Hopefully we can get the most expensive meds thru pharmaceutical company (1 is $400 a month)otherwise a job would have to be found somehow somewhere...

  5. Lets just hope and pray it never comes to that. Its hard to think about it, but yes, I have thought about it. In fact, there is a rumor going around that they are going to shut down the Atlanta plant where Ian works and another plant and combine the two in Phenix City, AL...and yep, we will have to move. Just as we found our heaven. Lets just hope things dont come to that. But yep, things cross my mind like what you say. Kelly
