Meet Bonnie.
She's two years old. She should calve in late June, or thereabouts. She is a registered Jersey, and is bred to a registered Jersey bull.
She's about the same size as Secret, although her conformation is much better.
Thanks to Craigslist, I now have a heifer that can give me a calf, and consequently, some milk and cream. Here's hoping everything goes well with her.
She's fairly gentle, having been handled by her former owners. It won't take much to make her a total pet. I'll keep her in the small pen until the horses get acquainted with her; otherwise they'd chase her.
When is milk coming? I grew up drinking real milk and wouldn't mind getting a sample :-)
ReplyDeleteWelcome to Bonnie! It is going to be a very special event having your calf and drinking milk too! I hope Secret isn't jealous.
ReplyDeleteThis may sound silly but it's a real question... has Secret given up the barrel since Bonnie arrived? Just interested in Cow sociology.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great buddy for Secret too. My grandmother used to churn butter, we called it 'cows butter' and it was really yellow. Don't find that around here much anymore. You sure got some great pictures in the post before this one. The butterflies are beautiful and the scenes from the woods so pretty. I can just smell May flowers in my mind! Haven't found any for years even though I look every year. Ought to bottle up that fragrance and sell it!
ReplyDeleteMeesha, the milk is fit to save on the third day after the cow has her calf.
ReplyDelete"Ma", Secret isn't a bit jealous. She may be making a trip to the sale barn, though. I know this isn't what some of my readers like to read, but the little bit of money she brings would help us build Cliff's tractor fund back up; it suffered quite a blow with the purchase of this heifer.
Hyper, I don't know, since I put them both in confinement today, and I didn't move the tub in with them.
Midlife Mom, Jersey butter is indeed very yellow, although more so in spring and summer. Green grass makes yellow butter.
She is a pretty heifer. Awwww on Secret going to the sale barn. I was wondering if she would give up that black barrel but saw you had already answered that question. I hope she works out ok for you. Helen
ReplyDeleteWell your Bonnie doesn't live over the ocean! Farmers have to be practical
ReplyDeletewelcome Bonny! I think you'll like it living with Donna :p
ReplyDeleteWelcome pretty Bonny! Yum, fresh milk and cream! A calf every year and a friend for Secret!
ReplyDeleteWoo-Hoo...finally! I'm so happy for you, & I can't wait to see the little bundle of joy!
ReplyDeleteI'm so happy for you and for me. I can't wait to read about all of the adventures of Bonny and Secret. Anne
ReplyDeleteI hope you get a calf outta her! I'd love to see that =]
ReplyDeleteCongrats! You've got a new pet and Secret gains a girlfriend too.
ReplyDeleteHave a good week ahead.
I am so jealous of you right now, it isn't even funny. :-P (sorry I haven't been commenting lately....every time I comment on your blog, my Windows freaks out. LOL)
ReplyDeleteOh too bad Secret might go to the sale barn, but in this economy you have to be practical. Bonnie is a beauty.
ReplyDeleteIguess it is the sales or the freezer. Good luck with your Bonnie
