backroad homes tour

Cliff and I did one of our "back-road tours" on the motorcycle yesterday. We find it interesting, all the kinds of homes we see on the blacktops where there are no stringent zoning laws. It's the variety of homes that fascinates us. When a county has lenient zoning codes, you find some very creative housing. Often you'll see an old mobile home sitting right next to a mansion.

Knowing what happened here on our place, I realize that when a county tightens up their zoning rules, substandard mobile homes with people already living in them are "grandfathered in", which means you can go ahead and inhabit the home as long as you wish; but when you remove it or tear it down, you may not replace it. This is what happened with the rickety mobile home we brought here for my mom, which is now inhabited by "the renters". We gave them the home to do with as they please; they simply pay us for the space it sits on. They've been here for over ten years now, and I see no signs of them leaving. The place is an eyesore, and it's the first thing you notice when you come up our drive; but the people cause us no grief and seem quite content living there. "Live and let live" is our motto.

We're still puzzling over how this house is built.

  1. what do you need to do in the country to live in a mansion- there are no high-paying CEO's etc

  2. The big, stately houses, including the one under construction, were just outside of Odessa, which sits on I-70. Most people who live there work in the greater Kansas City area.
