Windows 7

The days of Windows Vista have about run their course. Any of us can go download the new Windows 7 HERE through this Friday That is, if the download servers will stop crashing under the strain.

I won't be downloading Windows 7; I'm no pioneer, and I subscribe to the "if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it" theory.

Hopefully this old Dell with Windows XP will last until Windows 7 has been tested and is being installed on all new computers.

  1. It's probably a good idea not to download Win7... This is a Beta version which means it might still have a few bugs. That is what they want is for people to try it out and tell them if they have any problems AND when Win7 goes to market-- your Beta version will no longer get updates and to keep using Win7 you'll have to buy it (well, probably... That's how it usually works, although Microsoft might give Beta testers a cheaper alternative...)

They did this (in a more limited version) with Vista too. That was a 'closed' Beta however and you had to qualify to test it. I think they are trying to get as many people to try 7 so it won't have the launch problems Vista did.

If you 'Beta test' a OS, it is usually a good idea to put it on a separate computer from your main one, or at least on it's own partition and use a dual boot system in case of a problem. Although I haven't heard any horror stories yet, this IS a Beta version ;p
