An old-fashioned winter?

When I was a child growing up in Taylor County, Iowa, I remember lots of snow and cold weather; I walked to my one-room school back then (no, I didn't walk uphill both ways), but if the weather was severe, my mom drove me the mile or two. The above picture, by the way, is of Skinner School, and that's my first teacher. I'm the mopey-looking girl near the back of the right-hand row.

We visited some of my dad's kinfolk in 1959, and my cousins and I built a snow-fort.

Even after we moved to Kansas City, I recall heavy snows that closed the schools for days at a time. Maybe it's just selective memory, but it sure seems to me like we got a lot more snow back then.

These days, I go into winter thinking I want lots of snow; by mid-January I realize it wouldn't bother me to never see another snowflake... even if we've had nothing but flurries up to that point.

Yesterday evening I watched the Fox 4 meteorologists (weather-guessers) discuss what they think will happen this winter: They all expect more snow than usual, not to mention below-zero temperatures.

I guess I'm ready. Of course, let's remember that these folks do well to accurately predict next week's weather; I'm not so sure I'll trust them on an entire winter's forecast.

  1. There was a one-room school house across the road from my grandma and when we used to vist them I always went over to the school and visited them too. How grand that you have a photo of your school. The desks looked just like those too and I do have one that was salvaged along the way. I never know what to do with it so right now it is stored in the garage. We still have as much snow as we ever did here. I don't recall every liking it and have always preferred staying in and keeping warm. Thanks for sharing your memories today. 'On Ya'-ma

  2. You know... the Farmer's Almanac has predicted that LAST WINTER was the first of 10 BAD winters in a row. I'm assuming BAD means lots of snow and cold. Ü But they are adults, probably... my kids think last winter was the first of 10 GOOD winters. LOL They love snow. We home educate... so there is no snow days for them... just hurry up so you can play days. °Ü°

I tried to find Skinner on google... couldn't find one in Iowa, but found a NEAT site on one room schools in MO.

Isn't THAT neat? I love people who try to preserve history. Good for them, and good for you for posting these pics. I love it.

  3. Donna love the photos! I remember snows just north of KC (Savannah) that went up to my waist (when I was 10-ish). That's a lot of snow! I'm not sure I'm down for those snows again, but one good one would be kinda nice.

  4. I remember snow all the way up to the top of our door... but anymore, not so much.
I'm hoping for some winter-worthy weather down here in Texas...

  7. A friend says that according to the persimmons and the wooly caterpillars, we are supposed to have a bad winter. I hope not. Lord, have mercy!

  8. We did get more snow when I was a kid. I remember one storm in 1962 when the plows didn't get through for 2 or 3 days. The snow was up over some of the windows in the house. No school for almost a week. As much as I like the snow I guess I wouldn't want that much!

  10. Because of your childhood snow forts, you showed me and Jim how to build an igloo at least once. Anyway, there is one that I remember really well, up near the "parking hole." The biggest snow that I remember in recent history was when Natalie wasn't even 2 yet, and we were in Carthage. On my birthday we got 18". Of course, being March, it was almost gone the next day, but it was fun to plunk Natalie down and see her up to her armpits in snow! She giggled so hard.

I think we had a lot more snow when I was growing up in North East Kansas than they get now. I can remember more Thanksgiving's and Christmas's that were white than those that were not.

I remember one Christmas I believe it was my brother made the biggest snowman, it took 3 of my uncles to stack his insanely huge snowballs, he rolled the whole yard up and we had a HUGE yard! I am sure my mom has pictures of it! LOL

We have been getting snow since yesterday and where we live here in Germany, this area doesn't get a lot, so we're all very excited and hoping it's like the winter of '05-'06 (record breaking year!).

  15. I'm sure you did get a lot more snow then, because I know when I was child in the sixties and seventies we got a lot more snow. Even in the eighties! Love those pictures!
