Shopping trip

Cliff and I went to a fundraiser dinner at the school yesterday; we'd purchased the tickets from granddaughter Natalie.  Since we were already planning on getting out of the house, I informed Cliff we were going to do some shopping.  You can imagine the reaction I got from that suggestion.
Cliff, however, needed underwear.  He's been giving me excuses for a long time about why he was still wearing various sizes (his size changes from one year to another) of raggedy underwear.  While he was still laying in bed sipping his coffee yesterday morning, I started removing the contents of his underwear drawer and tossing it on the bed.
"Look at this mess," I said.  "When's the last time you wore any of these boxer shorts?"
(He went through a brief phase of trying to wear boxers... it had something to do with riding the motorcycle, I think.)
He agreed that he didn't like them, and said he'd take them to the shop to use as rags.
We don't get Cliff's underwear at Walmart.  His mother brought him up in J.C. Penny underwear, by george.  Stafford brand.  They are not cheap.
But I have an envelope with money for clothing.  Every week twenty bucks goes into the envelope.
We don't shop for clothes often, so I figured that envelope would never be empty.  We've spent more on clothing that I thought we would, but we haven't drained the fund dry yet; of course, nobody has needed shoes so far.
Cliff decided since I was forcing him to go shopping, he needed some new T-shirts; he has a whole drawer full of perfectly good ones, but all of them have some kind of stain or other, mostly grease stains from his playing working in the shop.  I'm a terrible laundress; I never check for stains.  I don't check pockets, either.  I'm basically lazy.  So shoot me.
Of course his mom taught him to only wear Stafford T-shirts.  We picked up two packages.  On the way to the cash registers, I nabbed myself a couple of packages of underwear.  Ten pairs of men's whitie-tightie underwear, six T-shirts, and three packages of ladies' underwear:  $98.
Boy, am I glad we have envelopes.  In the old days I would have used my Penny's charge card and figured out how to pay for the stuff next month when the bill came in the mail.  I no longer have a Penny's charge card.
See?  It's possible to teach an old dog new tricks.
I'll tell about the rest of our shopping adventures in another entry.
So now you know more than you ever wanted about the underwear in this house.  I wonder if Cliff will approve this entry when he wakes up?  If it disappears, you'll know he didn't like it.

  2. Well Donna, before this post gets zapped I thought I would say it is a thumb's up on JC Penny's guy's underwear here too. Nothing else will do. CH has tried them all and they are the best! Fun post :)

  3. Glad Cliff is now outfitted with his new stuff. My husband announced yesterday, he needs some new underwear too. But... he's determined to buy his online. Says there is a bigger selection and it's cheaper. I guess we'll see if that's true???

  4. My husband is the same way. His underwear drawer is the pits. He folds everything neatly but one day I was cleaning out drawers. His excuses were , if their is a hole in them they are cooler in summer, and bunches of little holes from when he was working from the torch he used off and on even his sox had holes in them.

With cotton futures the way they are, this was probably a very good time to buy! Yikes!

  8. This must be underwear month...my hubby requested some last weekend too. I check pockets since my daughter left chapstick in hers and it was nicely distributed on the clothes in the dryer. Have a great week, Sheila

  9. When I find holes in my hub's underwear, the hole suddenly gets bigger, 'cause I rip it more. I know that guy....he'll wear the underwear til there's nothing left but the waistband...

I don't check pockets, either. And I don't sort. I throw it all in together. Sure, some stuff doesn't get a bleaching (like socks) but at least it's clean....

  12. There was a Pharmacist I worked for named Richard Schmidt. Schite was the first person ever to try and sell me on to the envelope bill paying method. He became a friend and never steered me wrong with his wisdom. He grew up on a farm, but wanted to go to pharmacy school. He met Claire in high school,as he would say. "There wasn't a long courting." They simply married. Egg money and his misc.jobs helped him finish pharmacy school with the envelope bill method. They raised 3 boys, owned a simple home. He still practiced up in his 80's as a Pharmacist. Funny thing though, none of his boys went to college like their dad. He was so proud of his boys. Tony was a plumber. I don't remember what the other two did? I do know it was a trade though. He never seemed stressed about life. I think the envelope method for bill paying contributed to that. He was a perfectionist though with his job as a "druggist." I loved working for him.

  13. Lazy gal's laundry trick: toss everything in the wash with one of those Tide stain pouch thingies, the orange and white ones. Start the washer but leave the lid up. That way it soaks. I start mine before I go to bed and soak it all night. In the morning, put the lid down and the cycle will finish. Those Tide thingies get out nearly everything if you soak them. Of course, if you forget to put the lid down in the morning (as I have been known to do) you get behind on your laundry before you know it.
Failing that, Rit dye will cover pretty much anything that won't come out (wink)!

  14. Donna I loved your post today. It actually had me laughing. I think all men are the same. I check my husbands pockets before I do the laundry, because I usually always find something. I have washed too many paper towels, and they really make a mess!
    Hugs,
    Pat
