Changing the schedule

Cliff has been mourning the fact that by the time he goes out to play work in the shop, it's already too hot to be out there.
I told him it's a shame he isn't a morning person, because the sun comes up at 5:30.  That's when I go out to the garden.  On a day like this one, it's still too hot, but at least it doesn't feel like a blast furnace.
Cliff's trouble is that he doesn't like to just get up and start doing physical things right out of bed.  Since he's retired, he spends two or three hours waking up gradually, most days.  Also, his arthritis likes to be awakened slowly; his body has to get loosened up a little before he starts his day.  Years of working second shift have reinforced these habits.
However, he agrees it's a good idea, and is going to give it a shot tomorrow.  I'll be surprised if it works, but you don't know until you try.
I'm wondering how much it would cost to use a window air conditioning unit out there occasionally.

We have a window unit in the shop where Johnny works on our machines. We only run it when he is working. It doesn't run the electric up that much. Our shop & the house are on seperate lines, so I know just how much the unit takes.

  2. I think an air conditioner for the shop would be a great idea for Cliff. It's too hot to work outside for any length of time for sure.

  3. I agree with MA. It sounds like due to many factors, Cliff isn't set up to be an early morning person. I don't really like to do anything physical either right after I get up. I feel stiff.

  4. I'm in the same boat. Not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination and I have things I want to do out in the shop. A window unit would work fine as long as I don't want to run any of my power tools. I only have enough power out there to run one or the other. What a pain!

  5. NEVER ever been a morning person myself. Understand Cliff's dilema. Curious if it works out getting up earlier??? I think you're on to something. An air conditioner out there in his shop just might be worth the money. His health is more important. These temps have been brutal.

  6. I taught in a school building that was almost 100 years old and it would get hot as heck in there. One teacher bought 4 used window AC units on craigslist and garage sales. It did get cool in his room.

  7. A window unit would definitely be the way to go. They are affordable and cheap to run. I have one in my bedroom because I like to sleep practically freezing to death.

    Get one!
