Do you know what these birds are?

I can't take pictures of them at the feeder because they detect movement at the window and leave, no matter how sneaky I try to be.  They're ungainly and ugly, and stay in a flock.  I took pictures of them on the fence and the satellite dish and cropped them.  If you recognize them, let me know.  They must be very common, as many of them as I see.  Click on the pictures to make them a little bigger.

Thanks to Penny, I believe these are cowbirds.  It seems their reputation is as ugly as their appearance.  Stupid bad birds, eating at my feeder.  Shoo!

  1. No a clue...but I can relate to trying to take pictures of the critters in my back yard, which is on the wetlands, only to have them escape before I can get the shot.

  2. Do they have any gold spots? Could they be grackles?

I just watched the PW clip. Ree is such a hoot. I think what you see is what you get, very down to earth and friendly. I'd like to know how to get an invite to the ranch!!!

  3. I don't think they're grackles. No purple, and no gold spots. And they're fatter than grackles I think.

  4. I think they are cowbirds ~ very common in North America ~ check the Audubon website - http://www.audubon.org/bird/research/

to see if this is what you see. I have seen them in Calif and Mexico. They like agricultural and wooded areas the most.

  6. Cow birds also lay eggs in the nests of other birds, and of the eggs are removed they will come back and destroy the eggs that the other bird layed.
