livestock out my front door

Not many people have a view of the back of a barn outside their front door. I can't believe we talked about tearing this barn down, when we first moved back here. I love it being there!

I've fed Secret now, so she's occupied. But now that she's practically in my front yard and knows where I live, she can be heard bellowing at me until I get out there and give her some hay every morning.

And those horses? They've been fed too. But when I let Sadie out in the morning, they're all up here in front of the tin shed looking at me with hungry eyes. Blue usually nickers when he sees me, too, as if to say, "Aren't you going to feed us? We're hungry!"

When the grass is lush and green, Secret can wander with the horses. Horses aren't good at sharing their meals, though. So as long as they're being hand-fed their hay, Secret stays separate.

You'll need to turn down your sound due to wind noise, but here's a nice, relaxing video of Secret enjoying her hay.

I think she has lovely horns. Under normal conditions, all breeds of dairy heifers are de-horned, usually with caustic paste shortly after birth; so the horns never emerge. Horns can be dangerous, even on a friendly cow. But I happen to like the look of a cow with horns, so there she is.

  1. I always thought that the bulls were the only ones with horns...see I learn something new every day! It will be nice to see the grass green and lush once more. 'On Ya'-ma

  2. Watching Secret reminded me of the bull Rob had in Mexico. He was a beautiful black and white and came to us as a calf. We fenced off an area in the ravine for him. He would follow Rob all along the fence while he worked. Finally, he found our bedroom window and began 4:30 am wake-up calls for breakfast. I love reading your stories, Donna. Thank you for sharing. Blessings, Penny

  3. Secret and Blue both know who their Mama is. Knows who takes care of them. That was to nice of a barn to tear down. I hope you aren't overrun with flies this summer though. Helen

  5. I would leave the barn there too. As a matter of fact we are thinking of building a new barn behind the house. LOL Our old barn is just 100 feet away. The new one will be closer

  9. Barns are seen typically painted in red. Why is that?

The view is good and very convenient in fact. Secret is loving it... all the hay she can eat.
