Books

Cliff and I are both doing quite a bit of wintertime reading. Last month I asked my readers for book suggestions, and Katie suggested "The Shack".

Cliff got around to reading it first. He kept asking me, "Who told you about this book? It's strange."

I'd say, "I don't know; somebody on Blogger."

So this morning I looked up that entry and found the guilty party.

I understand what the book is saying. I like the way it ended. But frankly, most of it bored me. Plus, it's hard for me to imagine God being portrayed as looking like Aunt Jemima. It's just too much stretch of the imagination for this old gal.

But you know, it's nice sometimes to read something I wouldn't ordinarily have chosen; it's good for me to get out of the box to which I usually confine myself.

Now I'm going to check out some other books my readers suggested.

The next four on my list, suggested by my loyal readers: "The Color of Water", "The Secret Life of Bees", "Autobiography of a Face", and "Pillars of the Earth". That last one was suggested by one of you, and also recommended by a co-worker of Cliff's.

I tried getting some of the books on Oprah's Book Club several years ago and found them all (the ones I chose)hard going. My method is just to go to the library and look thru the new books now. I love the Midcontinent Public Library because I can go online and pick the books I want (using authors I know I like)and they will be waiting for me to pick up (they send me an email)

  5. Yeah I've seen a lot of followers of The Shack on FB. I don't think I chose to become a fan b/c I was not sure what it represented. But lots of my Christian friends chose to be a fan. George has read 10 books this year. He keeps up with it and writes it on a list! lol
I've only read 2 I think - well 3 if you include my text book. Hey you have 100 followers on here. Cool. Secretly that is my goal - to have 100 followers. he he. I'm only at 98. I made it to 99 once but I guess someone found me less than thrilling. Might have been b/c someone deleted a blog as there have been a few.
Take care and have a good day - that front is coming thru here now.

Donna, have either of you ever read any Janice Holt Giles books? At least a couple of them are about Missouri and several are about Kentucky. I believe all are out of print now and she is dead but she lived at Spout Springs Kentucky in Adair County. I really enjoy her books. Richard

I have several copies of Face, Donna. Yes, I love it that much & tend to give it away. If you want I can send you one. Promise I won't stalk you once I have your address, although I am mighty fond of Blue.
Also, The Color of Water I read 2x. It was excellent.

  10. I also found it hard to believe and follow. But sometime you can't judge a book by it's cover. Pillars of the Earth - Interresting read. Take care of you,
    Katie

  11. Love to read, and I am one to get stuck on just a few authors and keep up with their books. Venturing out of the box as you say, is hard, but sometimes it has granted me some good reading and new authors to follow. I didnt read The Shack. I think Mama did, but like Cliff, was not that impressed. Hey, glad to hear Cliff still has his job. Sorry for the others that lost theirs, but glad it was not Cliff. Hugs, Kelly

  13. I loved the Secret Life of Bees. I liked the Shack too. I read it as a demonstration of God's love for us even when things don't make sense.

  14. The Color of Water and The Secret Life of Bees are both good, but I've never read the others. I like to read something that I usually wouldn't read once in a while, too, even if I don't really care for it for the most part while I'm reading. But I have so little time for reading nowadays (or take so little time) that I usually would rather read something I'm pretty sure I'm going to enjoy.
