I have a cold

It isn't a serious thing, there's no fever or chills.  Yesterday it began with a terribly sore throat.  Now, we women learn early on that we must pamper ourselves when we're under the weather, once we're grown, because nobody else likely will; and that's what I do.  Last night before going to bed, I applied Vicks over my neck and chest because that's what my mama did when I was a little girl; somehow just smelling that stuff, I can feel my mama's hands rubbing my back and my chest thoroughly, smearing me up like a greased pig; that was so comforting when I was a sick kid.
I don't take decongestants because they make me feel worse than the cold.  Consequently, I woke up at 2 A.M. all stuffed up and never went back to sleep.  That's no big problem, since I don't have to do anything if I don't feel like it.  Except pamper myself.
When I came to my computer this morning, I noticed something on AOL health about putting a lemon and a hunk of ginger root and some honey into a blender, mixing it, and then straining it.  I didn't do that, but I did mix some honey with some ReaLemon Lemon Juice, and then added a little ground ginger.  Whoa, that was so soothing to my throat!  You must all try it, next time you have a cold.   Later today I had a cup of green tea and added some of the honey-and-lemon mix to that; very tasty.
Today my cold is at the stage where water is running out of my nose at the most inconvenient times, so I'm carrying a box of tissues with me everywhere.  I skipped my walk today, much as Sadie hates it when I don't go with her and Cliff.
I wanted comfort food, so I made meat loaf, mashed potatoes, cooked cabbage and Harvard beets; oh, there's nothing wrong with my appetite!  Funny thing, Cliff seemed to think he was the one being pampered; it's one of  his favorite meals.  But I made it especially for me.  The oldest grandson happened to show up right after we finished eating and polished off the potatoes and most of the meat loaf.
So, what do you do to comfort yourself when you have a cold?  What makes you feel better?

By the way, I want to thank all of you for your comments, emails, and "smoke signals" letting me know you care about my loss of Blue.   You are such good people.

  1. Hi Donna,
I hope you will soon be feeling better. I also remember my Mama rubbing Vick's salve on my chest, and then she would take a hot cloth diaper and take safety pin's, and pin it to my nightgown, so it wouldn't come off while I was sleeping. I did the same same to my son when he was little. We never forget what our Mama's teach us. I hope you have a good evening, and get some rest.

    Hugs,
    Pat

  2. We always got the same treatment with the Vicks and to this day I still use it too. I was always told to feed a cold and starve a fever so I think what you did is a good thing. Comfort food always makes us feel better. Thanks for the tip on the ginger and lemon. I'll have to remember that one. Hope you are better soon!

homemade chicken vegetable soup! Plus tea with honey and lemon. And oddly, Mexican food. It's got enough seasoning that I can still taste it and they say peppers are good for you

  7. I make Bee Spit Tea. Take boiling water, add some milk,(if you want it thin, just a little milk, if you want it thicker, add more) and honey to taste. This drink will also break a fever in a second. Hope your feeling better soon.

DONNA, THOSE HOME REMEDYS ARE GOOD.
HONEY CAN BE A BASE FOR DIFFERENT REMEDIES. APPLE CIDER VINEGAR SWEETENED WITH HONEY AND FLAVORED WITH A FAVORITE SPICE IS FINE.
THERE ARE PAMPHLETS AVAILABLE FOR HONET RECEIPES FOR USE IN HOME REMEDIES.
I MIX HONEY WITH PEANUT BUTTER FOR A TASTY SANDWICH. sam

Donna you loved Blue. Not living in the country myself, you shared your photos of you and Blue riding near your farm. It brought me back to a happier time at my Grandma Howard's farm. She had mules and hers were dossal. Bessie the mule would allow me to ride her. I thought I was leading her, but she was leading me on her path she had walked to many times to feeding near the barn.

  12. I had that cold too...adn let me tell you...I fell in love with those Puffs leenex that have the lotion in them...my nose never did get raw like it usually does, and it ran all the time for days! Danny's mama told me to take a teaspoon of sugar and pou enough whyskey on it to just barely wet it and sallow it at night then get in bed and cover up...I did this and although it made me gag, :-) I did feel better the next day! Hope you are feeling better by now.

  13. I hope you are feeling better. I was sitting watching TV with Thomas tonight and all of a sudden the very back of my throat started hurting -- just out of no where! I am going to try your ginger and lemon. I can remember Mom making us ginger tea when we had a stomach ache. I still use Vick's vapor rub too. And I use it on my kids. Sometimes it's the only thing that will open me up. I like to drink Celestial Seasonings Echinacea Complete Care tea. It tastes good and helps my throat.

I am going to miss the videos of you and Blue.
