I'm anxious for the hummingbirds to return

Pauline lives in Texas, which puts her far south of me.

I was looking at her blog and saw that she's had a hummingbird show up at her feeder already, and he actually sat on her finger!

So I checked online to see how long I have to wait for hummingbirds. Looks like May 1 or thereabouts.

I have to say I didn't have much luck with my bird feeder this winter; I guess they didn't like what I served. Early in the fall I saw lots of finches feasting out there, but once winter arrived, nothing. So I'm anxious for hummingbirds; they always seemed to be grateful for what I offered them.

That hummingbird on the right? I stole it from Pauline. I didn't even ask; I have no shame.

Cliff and I went to the visitation for my aunt last night, and I saw some cousins I had not seen in years. One of Aunt Ruth's daughters had helped her sort pictures when she moved to the rest home, and gave me the ones she thought I might want. I had copies of some of them already, but there were a couple by which I was pleasantly surprised.

This Christmas card is from somewhere around 1990, I think. You can't imagine what a feat it was getting Cliff to hold that turkey; he is somewhat allergic to poultry (he gets all itchy). However, he preferred to let me hold the goose because geese poop a lot, and he didn't want to take the chance of getting pooped on.

This is a picture of me and my parents that I don't recall ever seeing before. Must have been a windy day, the way Daddy's hair is standing up.

  2. What a great picture with the goose and turkey! It's great that the cousin shared those with you. Although funerals are my least favorite place to be, it is good to reconnect with those we've not seen in ages. You'll probably get a hummer before we do, so I'll be watching to see when you have one turn up. We love watching them at the feeders every year.
Hope your Saturday is a great one!

Donna if you have cardnals in your area black oil sunflower seed will draw them. I fed birds winter and summer for several years and really enjoyed the inter action with the birds , but it became too expensive so I tapered off to give them a chance to find other sources of food and quit. Ooooooh, Donna! I'm a hummingbird FANATIC!! I LOVE the little guys and gals. We have Anna's out here in Portland for the most part and they stay year 'round as long as they have a food source. So my neighbor Sharon and I provide food for them 12 months out of the year. Even in all the snowy, frigid weather we had this past Christmas season, the hardy little ones devoured nectar faster than we could make it...I make mine 1 part sugar to 3 parts water, then boil it 'til the sugar 'melts'. My younger brother is an avid birder and he told me if the birds stick around, they go into a torpid stage where their heartbeats slow waaaaaaaaaay down. One day when he went out to feed his, they ambushed him...one even stuck it's tongue/beak in to his ear, HA!
