Greetings, from the Zoo

News from the animal kingdom around here.

First of all, the goat ladies have dog collars on their necks.  I intend to be able to put a leash on them and take them out to the woods sometimes so they can eat leaves and weeds.  I can't let them loose anywhere besides the pen where they live because the grandson's two dogs would chase them and, if they caught them, they might kill them.  However, the dogs will listen to me if I have them with me on a leash; one loud "NO!" and they'd stop.

The cats eat in that little house on the old cat tree, which I moved to the porch.  I can't keep their food anywhere else, because my dog Gabe eats it.  They usually sleep all night on the very top shelf, side by side.  Right now, though, Butch is in the living room in Gabe's bed, while Unique is in the back porch napping.

Oops!  Butch has moved to my lap with Gabe.  By the way, Butch is the vocal one, meowing at the top of his lungs.  He can also be heard across the room when he's purring.

I'm sure learning about cat litter-boxes:  Both Butch and Unique know what to do with it, but they toss a lot of the litter all over the back porch floor, too.  I suppose I'll have to get a cover for it.  Also, Unique likes to just lay in the box, even though she knows what it's real purpose is and uses it for that also.  Right now, though, she is sleeping atop the old, cat tree that we had for Blue, which I've put in the back porch.  They like it so well, they sleep in it all night long.

I suppose things are going on OK, all things considered.

So, how's your day going?

  1. What a group of animals! We always had animals when the kids were young. Always a Saint Bernard and various cats that would have kittens. One time we had a pet duck, a pet squirrel, a guinea pig, a ferret and a Basset Hound all at the same time! Later we had fish, a gecko and a snake. It was Crazy Town at my house with 5 kids and their pets, and all the friends who would show up around dinnertime. Grocery shopping required several carts!

This week we added a 3rd Chihuahua to our home, as dear friend has moved in with us. So now it’s Chica 20 yrs old, Monkey 13 yrs old and now Lucy 14 yrs. Lucy was silent until last night. She can truly bark! Blessings to you and Cliff and your zoo. Penny

I enjoy your pets vicariously; Meredith is enough for me right now.

  5. You seem content with your menagerie and I'm delighted to see Butch and Gabe chilling on your lap. I always worry about animals getting along, perhaps because Mari can't get along with any other creatures.

    1. Gabe likes cats, and even plays with them. He is jealous, though, so if I'm petting one of the cats, I have to pet him too. It's a good thing I have two handsl

  6. A local retreat center recently adopted four goats. Among other things they eat the invasive honeysuckle.

  7. I like the idea of taking the goats for a walk on leashes. Your cats are adorable. They often behave differently when it comes to litter boxes.
My two female cats were always careful and polite. My male cat Bosco was wild in his litter box. He would dig like crazy until half of the litter was on the floor. I got him a box with high sides, but it didn't help much.

Aw, how much fun! Walks with goats would be great. I love that Butch and Unique are settling in and making routines for themselves. But yes, litter boxes are a challenge. If I had to have a totally inside cat I think I would get one of those covered ones. But avoid those supposedly self-cleaning types. I've heard they can be dangerous. Rebecca in SW MO

    1. My former daughter-in-law got one about a month ago, and the cats, both being old, don't know what to do with it. However, a friend said she got a top-entry litter box and it really helped. I didn't even know there was such a thing!

  9. I am curious to see how walking goats works. I can pet all 4 kittens and they eat from my hand. But here is the thing that made me laugh: Tim fed the kittens last night. His son was there. I said, 'did you offer to give him a kitten?' (It was a joke. Mike does not like cats.) Tim said "we are not giving them away. We are keeping them." I was surprised. The big old softy.
