We've received a check!

It was very interesting watching the buyer measure and price the logs according to size and quality.

He would call out board feet, and price, according to quality.  The walnut brought anywhere from 50 cents to $3 per board foot.

As he called out the numbers, this lady put it into some sort of calculating thingie.

He spray-painted where he wanted the loggers to cut the logs later.

The wind was horrible, but perhaps you can hear him call out the board feet and prices, a couple of times.

Cliff and I had a certain sum in our heads, an amount we'd mention, saying, "It had BETTER bring at least that much!"  We got almost twice that much, so yes, we are happy.  We're splitting the money:  Cliff's half goes into his tractor fund, and my half goes into our emergency fund.

A little icing on the cake:  Although we gave no instructions to leave any certain trees, there were none taken that I was in any way attached to.

The two that used to stand in front of my cabin are still there.  See how they lean toward each other?  The one on the left is too small, and the one on the right was damaged.  So my two old Indian chiefs still guard the property.

This tree wasn't one I was particularly attached to, but it looks rather nice standing there alone.  Loggers do not want trees that stand alone, because the trunks are so short up to the point where the branches start.  They like trees in the woods that grow tall, with no branches until far up the trunk.

That's the reason they left these three trees, which are the ones I depend on for walnuts.

We were surprised that they took one particular tree...

It's a tree that scores of relatives used for target practice over a period of several years.  It didn't bring a big price, but it was worth something.

  2. Interesting about the Walnut trees. Hmmmm..we have some on our property too. But I am kinda fond of those trees as there is not very many of them. I think that is neat though how you could make a few bucks doing that. Very interesting and you have plenty of trees so it's not a big deal. I think that wind arrived here today. Oh it is soooo cold too! Surprised me.

  4. I've enjoyed seeing how walnut trees are harvested for their wood. Thanks for the insight. The pictures were great. I'm thrilled you got a New Year windfall as a result. That is some bonus. Glad you and Cliff split it. ENJOY! I cashed in some spare change and got a little bump to my checkbook too. Year is off to a nice start. Take care.

  5. What great news! To get more than you expected is just wonderful! It's always nice to have a little extra money as a cushion. I've heard that as the New Year begins, so it ends. It's looking like 2012 is going to be a great year for you!
