spam comments and spell-check

I'm still battling the spam comments; at least once per day I get one of the Asian porn comments, but it's always on an older post, so it doesn't show up because I have moderation set for anything over three days old. Since this particular one was always on the same post, one with a peach cobbler recipe from last July, I decided to delete it and see what happens. I occasionally get spam on new posts, but not often. I simply delete them. It isn't real people doing the dirty deeds, it's "bots" set out to troll the Internet (by real people).
I could avoid all this by (a) using word verification for comments or (b) blocking anonymous commenters. Either method loses commenters, so for now I'll keep doing what I'm doing. It's rare that I get a legitimate anonymous comment, but when I do it's very special because it's usually someone saying, "I've read you for a long time" or "I read your blog every day." It's a treat to hear from someone like that, somebody who has never come out in the open before.
On another note, am I the only person whose spelling seems to have gotten worse since spell-check appeared on the scene? In the old days I'd stop and think about how to spell a word; now I just type it in any old way, knowing spell-check will give me the proper spelling.

  1. So far I haven't had anymore spammers. I don't spell as good as I used to do So I am thankful for spell check. I like the spell check on comments I do also. That is only on Firefox as far as I know. Helen

  2. I get at least one or two of those spammers each week. Still have my blog set for approval of comments before they show.

  3. I know getting those spam comments has to be aggravating. I used to be good at spelling and grammer when I was younger but not anymore. I've never used spell check so I'm sure some of my spelling on my blog looks kind of funny to my readers.

I CANNOT spell anymore, and spelling was the ONE thing that I could do. To be honest, it really really bothers me, because I cannot even visualize the word....hopefully, it isn't an indicator of anything except advancing age. Enjoy your blog so much!

  5. All at once I'm getting a lot of spam comments too. So far I've just been deleting them as they come into my inbox, but if they get more frequent I'll have to turn on those stupid nonsense words to publish comments, and nobody hates them worse than I do.

I never use spell check, believe it or not. It's pretty obvious sometimes when I mangle the spelling on a word. Strangely, to me, it's the more common words I tend to misspell, not more difficult or less used words.

  6. I don't see what's the big deal with word verification, I don't mind filling it in.
