Another rainy day (but hey, I'm alive to see it!)

First of all, let me show you how happy Chickie is to get her spinach every day:

She doesn't care that it's raining.  After all, she is a house chicken for the time being.  The spinach is going to seed now, so I'm going to have to find some other vegetable she likes.

It's a heck of a garden year.  My garden is in the same spot as last year, on a bit of a slope.  There was no problem with washing last year because we got very little rain.  This year we have gotten gully-washing rains, one after another.  Whole rows I planted did not come up, and I can only assume the seeds washed downhill and out of the garden.  That's just a guess.
We're getting unbelievably frequent rains.  Thanks to my sandy, fast-draining soil, I was able to till the garden Sunday afternoon.  Yesterday I planted some cabbage seeds and carrots.  Cliff and I ran some errands this morning, since it was raining AGAIN!!!!  However, when we got home the rain gauge showed only about 1/10th of an inch of accumulation.  I checked the soil in the garden and found it to be damp, but not soaked and muddy, and planted some corn.  Honestly, it's been such a terrible year for most of my gardening efforts that I don't even expect anything to come up.
It's staying so unseasonably cold that the tomato plants don't want to grow, and the strawberries don't want to ripen.  It's supposed to warm up Monday.  We shall see.

Our hay is past ready to mow and bale, but with temperatures like this, along with frequent rainfall, it's impossible.  There has not been one single window of opportunity for hay harvesting; it would require at least three days to cure, as dense as it is.  In a normal year it would have been put up by mid-May, but of course Cliff couldn't have done it then anyway.  At least if the weather ever allows it, he is back to his normal self, with no tubes protruding from his body and feeling pretty much strong enough to handle it.

  1. We did have some hot weather here last week but now we are back to seasonally cooler weather for us. Our forecast is very similar to yours. I haven't heard our farmers complaining, but then I don't get out in the country much anymore. It was a beautiful day here and I loved being outside for the most of it. Hope what you planted isn't a wash out too.
