Although I have the money set aside to pay our taxes this year, I had intended to pay the taxes using a credit card, then pay the bill as soon as it showed up next month, just for the credit card rewards. Seemed like a good plan to me.
Then I read the Credit Card Charge Form that came with my tax bill: "I understand that the total amount charged on my credit card will include an additional 3.9% Convenience Fee as allowed by Missouri Statute 130.055. This convenience Fee is not retained by the Collector or the County."
I'm pretty sure the $50 this would add onto my two tax bills is more than I would have netted in rewards. I'll skip the credit card and pay cash. But they're not getting it until the last week of the year!

Bargains
I hate to let Anonymous stay at the top of the page for too long, so I'll tell you about how we're spending our money. This time it isn't about envelopes, much.
Our Grand Marquis is rear-wheel drive, meaning it's useless in snow or on icy roads. Last winter we had to use our ancient Ford four-wheel-drive pickup for a solid month because of bad road conditions.
This year, Cliff said, we're getting snow tires. Thanks to budgeting, there's actually going to be money in checking this week to get the snow tires, studded, even. So today's the day. I'll lay odds it will be the mildest winter in history, making snow tires unnecessary, because that seems to be the way things happen. However, it's a comfort knowing we'll be able to get around in our car if there's a blizzard or, more likely in this neck of the woods, an ice storm.
I'm still watching prices on the Nook ereader: Best Buy will have them on Black Friday as a door buster for $99. However, Barnes and Noble has been selling reconditioned ones on Ebay for that price for quite awhile, and the 3G one is only $119. I have my $99 set aside, waiting for the right opportunity.
Amazon has a Garmin for $99 now, so I'm thinking this is the time to get another one, one that's current with new roads. There's nothing wrong with the one we have except that sometimes it thinks we're out in the middle of a field instead of on the road; when that happens, the lady in the Garmin gets upset and yells at us to turn around.
Taxes are due by January 1, and I have that mostly squirreled away in the bank. I intend to pay with a credit card, though, because of the rewards we get for using it. As soon as the bill comes in January, I'll pay it in full.
Did you know there's an extra payday in December? That is perfect timing! If ever humanity needed an extra payday, December would be the time.
Alrighty then, Anonymous has lost his place of prominence.

My latest poll
Over there on the top right, you'll see my latest poll: Do you think religious groups should have to pay taxes?
Now I'll tell you truthfully that if I could choose WHICH religious groups could be left out of paying taxes, I'd probably vote no. Because don't we all think we know which religions are the right ones? And of course, my church is better than your church. (I assume everyone knows that is said tongue-in-cheek.)
But honestly, who can say without a doubt which church (or even which religion) is right?
So I say churches, synagogues, mosques, Buddhist temples, and all other religious groups should, indeed, be taxed.
That's just my humble opinion.

New Year's thoughts
Cliff and I ate far too many seasonal goodies: sweets, cheese balls, dip and so forth. Each of us, when we weighed yesterday, had gained 11 1/2 pounds. So we got ourselves back on track with our diet. This morning, I had already lost 3 of those pesky pounds. I know, I know... it's water weight. That, and just the fact that I actually let my gut get empty for the first time in weeks. Still, 8 1/2 pounds sounds a lot easier to shed than 11 1/2.
Speaking of getting rid of excess: This past year we totally paid off all credit card debt, which is a great feeling. We still use the cards, mind you. But we pay them off in full, each month.
Well, we got a little carried away in December, buying things for the motorcycle, and various other stuff for ourselves. The $800 bill that arrived yesterday bowled me over. Surely it was a mistake?
Nope; I went over each purchase, and they're all legitimate. I think I'll be paying this bill over a two-month period. At least we have something to show for what we charged; all we have to do is go out to the shop and look at the motorcycle.
I don't think I'll be making any more purchases online for a couple of months.
Oh, and the gravel I threw a hissy-fit for? It's coming Friday, weather permitting. Around $300.
Yeah, and it's time to send in personal property taxes. That's almost $400.
'Tis the season.
