Garden surprises

I haven't done anything to my garden for over a month except to go out to see if there are still ripe tomatoes coming on.  But there's more going on than that.  Yesterday I brought in the few beets that hadn't do too well.  I got a quart and a half of beet pickles for my trouble; they won't last long, because both of us love pickled beets.  (Notice the smallish tomatoes in the background.)

This morning I went out with a coat on because it was 42 degrees and found other treasures.  I brought in one turnip so big that it filled up a two-quart pan.

Then I went and got a shovel to see if the carrots I planted in late August that had done very little growing until the recent rains.

Usually the carrots in my garden are sickly and pale.  Not now!

Yesterday I was surprised to find some nice sweet peppers.

And yes, there are still tomatoes coming on and they are still delicious.

Our temperatures are not normal at all this year.  Or maybe this is the new normal.

I love pickled beets as well. Not sure if I have ever had a turnip. Your garden continues to bless you. Great! 🙏. Penny

    1. Not many people like turnips, or else they like them raw. I like them cooked like my mother made them. Although her method (and mine) is to put sugar in the water while they are cut up and cooking; so the sugar in the water makes the cut pieces sweet. It's a shame I mess up a healthy vegetable with sugar, but it's a guilty pleasure.

Wow!!! Home grown carrots taste nothing like the ones you get in the store.😋 I love raw turnips, but I just don’t care for them cooked. My Aunt used to put them with her boiled potatoes and sometimes even mash to try and fool me, it never worked.😂 Your green thumb is still going strong in November.

    1. It wasn't my green thumb. It was the rain.

  3. The temperatures in my area are above average, but as I haven't had to turn on the furnace yet I'm not complaining.

That’s awesome. It’s a good year for second gardens for those that plant.

    2. It wasn't a good year until the last couple months; we couldn't get any rain at all when we needed it.

    1. The only problem is the smell of beets cooking. If my grandson walks in when I'm boiling them he says, "I smell dirt!"

Donna, I enjoy reading about your garden goodies. I love turnips, but I love more the turnip greens on top of the underground turnip.

  8. Every year I attempt to grow carrots similar to the ones my mom grew in her garden when I was a child and every year, my end up pale and diminutive. It would be a dream to grow carrots that looked like yours!

    1. Apparently they like to be planted later in the year. Actually though, they were only about the size of my little finger for two months. Who knew that rain would make them grow after all that time? Not me.
