I've made my decision on an e-reader

I haven't purchased it yet, but Nook is the clear winner for one reason only:  Once I have my library card, I can check out and read books on the Nook.  That's right, friends and neighbors, I won't have to depend on Cliff to take me to the library, because I will be able to check out books from home!
Thanks to Astaryth (Jeanie) for giving me a heads-up on Nook originally, and for sharing the information about the libraries.  Even our lowly little hick-town library has joined the modern world!
Kindle is the cheapest, but it is not on the library's list of compatible readers.  Books can be downloaded to a PC or Mac, but I spend far too much time in this chair now; I certainly don't need to be sitting here to read a book.  Besides, I'd be distracted all the time: I'd be reading a chapter and think, "I need to check my email" or "Oh, my potatoes are ready to harvest in Farmville."
Now all I have to do is wait until the price of the Nook drops for Christmas.  If I'm able.
The Ipad was never in the running.  It's just too pricey, and I have no need for a multi-purpose device.

  1. I hope you get your Christmas wish. I'm still reading books and love them. I recently got a couple of months worth of reading at our library book sale. They do it every year. This year I got a lot of books at 50cents or a dollar and will enjoy reading them for sure. Now I just need to get rid of some of the hundreds of books that I've already read here at my house, I guess I'll have plenty to donate to their sale next year. That reading device sounds wonderful as you wouldn't have piles of books stacking up every where.

guess I need to re check mid continent. Last time I checked they didn't have that capability. A Nook would be great for traveling. right now I have a heavy suitcase when I travel with all the books I take!

  4. I know I live up here in the great north woods so I guess that's why I have never heard of a nook. Sounds great, I buy too many books and then just give them away, well at least most of them, I keep the ones I really like and would read again.

It's good you are living in the real world and talking about things like nursing homes. I agree, if I should go into Alzheimer's and didn't know where I was anyway then put me in a good home where I will get good care and can see the trees and grass.

May have to close my blog and I am not happy about it. Will let you know when and if. Or maybe I can go private.

  5. I've never heard of Nook-and did not know you could check out books with a reader-how cool is that!

  6. Our library lets you download as many as 10 books each time and you can have them in your reader for 10 days. I have used some from there but mostly download them from other sites on the internet.

  7. I didn't know that you could check out library books on a nook! That would definitely steer me toward a nook vs. a kindle. I have about 4 or 5 different ebook apps on my iphone that I use now. Someday I'd love to have a dedicated reader. I'm just waiting for the prices to drop down (though I suspect the original nook prices will drop when the color version comes out).

  8. Yes, I'm thinking about getting the color version of the Nook.

Here's a free website that was suggested by my local library's website: http://www.free-ebooks.net/

  9. You are going to love the nook! AND, I'll bet the prices definitely drop for Christmas with the new color version coming out. I'm not looking at the color one because it has an LED screen. The Black and white Nook has the e-ink. It is more like reading a regular book and much easier on your eyes! Besides, unless you are going to be buying magazines (which I'll bet you are not), or kids books, the color is wasted anyway. Most 'adult' books are printed in black and white anyway!

In addition to the Library books, Barnes and Noble does a 'Friday Freebie' each week. It's a different book they give away for free each week. Now, I am going to give you a -great- tip! Go to the Barnes and Noble site. Download the Nook Reader for your PC. Set up an account and start downloading any of the free books that you like NOW. Then, when you get your Nook you will already have some of your own books to read AND they will automatically show up on the Nook when you authorize it... How cool is that??

One caveat... I don't download all of the Friday Freebies. Some of them are books I am interested in, some are not. However, I have downloaded a couple I wouldn't have looked at if they hadn't been free and ended up enjoying them :)

  10. That would probably put me in the Noon's camp, too.

  11. I've never heard of the Nook, but it can download library books? That's cool. (and cheap)Several of my friends have Kindles and they love them, but it's tough for me to give up on the real books. I like turning actual pages.
