Let's talk about toilet paper

I'm on a quest to find the best toilet paper for the money.  Actually, I'm trying to get the best bang for my buck on lots of consumer goods, but this one is at the top of my list.
My experience with cheap, no-name TP has not been good.  Yes, the price is very low, but it seems as though one has to use three times as much of it to be effective, which pretty much wipes out the savings.
The big name brands these days give a choice of "soft" and "strong"; I can't really tell that much difference in the two.
I posed the question about which TP is best on Facebook and got some feedback from a few friends.  One brand was mentioned by three different people who are widely separated geographically and do not know one another:  Scott 1000.  So I bought a few rolls.  I haven't tested it yet, but we're almost out of the other kind.  Then we'll see.
Here's an interesting thing:  Consumer Reports gives Scott 1000 a terrible ratting.  Click on the picture to see it better:

Is Consumer Reports out of touch with real people?  I'm about to find out.
Dear readers, if you buy a brand you think is the best deal for the money... not cheapest price per roll, mind you, but the cheapest in the long run... let me know in a comment.
And yes, I do remember the days when we used Montgomery Ward and Sears catalogues.  You tore out a page, wadded it up tight to get the slickness out, then straightened it out and folded it into a square.  That way you also had something to read while you sat in the outhouse and pondered.

  1. Scott is your basic old fashioned toilet paper, kind of what you find in rest stops. I like it because it lasts longer. I guess we do have to use a little more because it is single ply. I never knew they actually rated toilet paper.. :)

  3. I'm so happy to know that I am not the only one trying to find a good toilet paper at a good cost! I don't know what in the world they have done to toilet paper! I never used to have a problem with it, but so much of it just falls apart into little pieces. I have found a great paper, but unfortunatly I can't remember what kind it was! So now I am starting all over again. I hope that you will post when you figure it out! Thanks Sharon

  4. I agree with you about the cheap stuff and love my Charmin extra soft. I look for sales and stock up when I find one but forget the cheeper stuff. I do remember the old outhouse when I'd visit my grandparents farm. I'm sure they'd be amazed at the price we pay for TP now...

  5. I remember using newspapers and I am not 60+ years old like everyone else here!

  6. We've learned to use single ply because the nice stuff clogs our 1000 gallon septic tank. (That's one cup I don't like to stir.)
Don't you just love this weather?

I always try to find the Charmin extra soft at Target. In quad rolls, like 12 rolls equal 48. I always figure for quality and the convenience of rarely having to change the rolls that that is the best value for us. I often find 12 rolls of it on sale at Target. You might want to check that out. One roll lasts a long time. If you are used to the cheaper stuff, you have to remind yourself to take less sheets to do the job.

  8. We like Angel Soft. Not as expensive as the others, but still good stuff.

I still like Quilted Northern but got annoyed when they made the sheets smaller. When we had a septic tank we were careful what tp we put in the toilet.

Donna, I left a comment, but I still think it is amusing how many people are commenting on this, but not your budget post! Ha Ha I guess this is a safe topic not like money, politics or religion! Karen

  11. This is an aggravating subject now days. I for one would be interested in the answer to this. I am glad I don't have to use those Sears catalogs any longer or go to that outhouse in the hot or cold weather.

  12. I've used Scott 1000 for many years because a roll lasts a long time. Don't mind the single plyness since I've changed what I eat. :)

  14. I've been using Scotts 1000 for years, tried the cheaper ones and found that it really wasn't a bargain in the long run. It ran out twice as fast. I buy tp when it's on sale and usually find a coupon in the Sunday paper for an extra $1 off. Sometimes CVS has it on sale at a good savings. Vicki

  15. Scott 1000 for me. I like it best, without regard to cost. Don't really know if it is cheaper or more expensive.

  16. I like Wally World's quilted version of generic. Northern is a good deal on a decent paper. And the Charmin x-strong is great paper I can sometimes get on sells or with coupons.

  17. Like I said on Facebook I like Scott's or Kroger's version of it. Whichever is cheapest at the time. Our family of 4 goes through about 6 rolls a week.
