A trip has been delayed

Oh yes, we're still going to Kansas.  However, this morning when I mapped out the whole thing, I saw that it was going to take over four hours one way.  As a day trip, that stinks, because Cliff would be putting in eight hours of driving in one day, in a state he isn't enamored of in the first place.

As a side note, I have to tell you about a friend who was born and raised in Kansas and, in her words, throws a hissy fit when somebody speaks against Kansas.  The other day I mentioned that Cliff doesn't care for Kansas and she said something to the effect of "if anybody has no use for Kansas, I have no use for them."  That's a paraphrase.
It's a state, not a human being!  I love Missouri.  I love Iowa.  They are my home states.  But honestly, I don't care whether you like them or not.  Feel free hate them.

I told Cliff maybe we should skip it and (bless his heart) he suggested that we should simply go down there, see what there is to see, and find a motel.  Perfect solution, especially since he's the one who came up with it.

I'm trying to keep us off the freeways for the main part of the journey because I like going through small, half-dead towns trying to read the history in the walls of abandoned buildings.  You notice I have us going south after the tour of the Flint Hills region?  That's the reason for the delay.
August 16 through 18 is the Kansas and Oklahoma Steam and Gas Association Show.  Yes, friends and neighbors, a tractor show.  We actually attended one of their shows several years ago when Cliff was still an Allis Chalmers man, because Allis was the featured tractor that year.  This year it will be John Deere.
Anyhow, it's the perfect solution.  It would be crazy to go now when we can kill two birds with one stone by waiting, and it will give Cliff something to look forward to.

  1. Your Cliff is a good man and staying over night when there is plenty to see and do sounds like it is worth spending 2 days there anyway.

  3. I've never been to Kansas, but it is most certainly a state and not a person. :) I'm sure that I would find interesting things about it if I visited, although I have no desire to do so at this point. We do the opposite here--we tell people, WA is terrible, it rains all the time, it's gray, there are too many hills, etc. We don't want anyone else to move here, like the huge influx of Californians we had several decades ago. Hope the trip goes great!!

  4. I finally learned how to spell hissy because I just bought the book Hissy Fit. Hope it's good. When anyone says anything bad about Texas I just think to myself they haven't been to the hill country or the piney woods. Sounds like you have a plan there.
