Coffee

I spent three days in coffee heaven while we were in Georgia.
The coffee brewed each morning in the family's Hamilton Beach pot was so excellent, I finally asked my son, "What kind of coffee is this?"
He showed me the package:  Maxwell House Breakfast Blend.
That's it?
All I can say is, in a world where most people seem to like warmed-up stump-water (weak coffee), this household had it right.
I realize, of course, that it's all a matter of opinion.  My mother-in-law used to come to my house and fill her cup half-full of water, then pour coffee from the pot to fill the cup.  Yuck.  My sister-in-law next door is the same way.
Anyhow, when you are the visitor, you take what you get and shut up; but the coffee I got during my stay in Georgia was to my liking.
Another thing I don't care for (besides stump-water) is flavored coffee.  Oh, I like the McDonald's Frappe, but that isn't coffee:  it's dessert.  I don't even like regular coffee from a pot that's recently had flavored coffee brewed it in, because the nasty taste is still there.  I use plain, generic coffee-creamer; that's the only additive I want.
Lest I forget, for those times when you just want one cup of coffee and don't want to wait forever, Jim and Deb have a Keureg.
Cliff had a cup of Keureg-brewed coffee the evening of our arrival and said it was great.  Later on I found out those little individual K-cups cost about 75 cents each.  Wow!  For one cup of coffee!
I finally allowed myself one cup of Keureg coffee; yes, it's very good.  It would be convenient to have a machine that makes one excellent cup of coffee, when you want it, in a matter of seconds.  But I only allow $280 each month for groceries.  I can't devote that much of it to coffee.
I think we're doing fine with our Bunn, as long as we use good coffee in it.
Besides, I really don't have counter space to have two coffee pots sitting around.

Methinks I doth protest too much.

  1. I like pure black coffee...nothing added. Too bad I can only drink half a cup; otherwise I get the jitters. :(

There's always going to be something out there that tempts us to change what ain't broke.

  2. I've got my Keurig cups down to about 47 cents a pop, but then again, I'm the only one in the house that drinks coffee. Otherwise I would most likely have to give it up. I absolutely love it, though.

I do love a good, strong cup of coffee.

  3. I love my coffee and can appreciate where you are coming from. But I do like variety and like both the flavored and unflavored brands. I like most all of them. I did put that Kuerig pot on my wish list and hope the babes all get together on it and get one for me this year. I'm thinking that as long as they always want to know what to get me, they can get me coffee. I shouldn't have to pay anything for it. I'm making room on the kitchen counter top now.

  5. I love my Equal Exchange Mind, Body and Soul coffee with my Monin Dark Chocolate sauce in a mocha. Delicious, but not cheap. You already know that we WA people are coffee snobs! ;)

  6. I laughed when I read this post. Yesterday morning, I had gotten my cup of coffee and my sister came behind me and got her cup. She put in her milk and sugar, took a sip, coughed, and said "That's not strong at all!" Haha...well, if it's weak, what's the point?!

I buy the HEB coffee - Snickernut, it's called... tastes like a Snickerdoodle cookie! I was looking at the Keurig, but then I noticed you had to buy the variety pack with no choices in what flavors I wanted more of... meh.

  7. I'm a tea drinker. But my husband lives for his coffee. That's why we bought a Keurig. He can have what he wants and I can have what I want. The K-Cups we buy are about 50 cents each. We drink one or two cups a day. We put it in our budget and stock up when they are on sale. Take care.

  8. I buy my coffee for my Keurig on-line and it's about 50¢ a cup. While that sounds expensive compared to a 3 pound can of Maxwell house for $10, (eeeewwwwww...) it's darned cheap for GOOD coffee.

When I'm out and about and stop for a cup of coffee, it's not unusual to spend $3 to $5 for ONE CUP.

Coffee is the only vice I have left. Don't smoke, don't drink and my wife won't let me play with painted ladies...:)

  9. I loved this entry Donna! We are die hard Folgers 100% Columbian coffee, but that being said, I don't like it too strong. Four level scoops seems to be the right amount and fill the water right up to the grate or just a wee bit above it. We have invested in a Bunn coffee maker twice in our marriage. It brews a whole pot of coffee in about a minute... It's worth every red cent for that machine... and I'm with you on the no nonsense creamer. I don't like that sugary sweet flavored stuff. LOL.

  10. PS We will sometimes trade off the Folgers for the Maxwell House... but in the end, I keep coming back to the Folgers. We haven't found anything not Columbian that we like. I will have to try that Breakfast Blend.

  11. My grandfather always had Maxwell House, and I still believe it's usually the best brewed coffee there is. Some brands taste better in certain kind of water, though, and at my house (growing up) we always had Folgers. It tasted better with their well water. Maxwell House just didn't taste right at home. But at my grandfather's (city water) it was supreme!
