I suppose I should apologize for the jumble of wires beside my television. I realize this would drive most people crazy, but I'm not most people; I've actually grown rather attached to that mess of wires.
Don't watch too closely, or you'll see my unmade bed in one of the pictures, too. Cliff's gone for a couple of days; when the cat's away, the mouse will play.
Yes, Iris is absolutely hypnotized throughout this show. She loves the cowboys and the kids and Ree and the cooking. She does, however, have a problem with the dog and all the horses and cows on the show. Since the sound of the show is running in the background, this video may get pulled off Youtube. If it doesn't show up for you, you'll know what happened.

Pioneer Woman came to me in a dream.
Folks, I am seriously not making this up. Last night I dreamed I was at Ree Drummond's ranch. I met Ree, Marlboro Man, and one of the girls. (The girls look a lot alike, and after all, it was a dream, so I'm not sure which one; but at my request, she took a picture of me with her mom.) Evidently I spent the night at the ranch, because I was there as Ree was making breakfast. Unfortunately, I woke up before breakfast was ready.
Just my luck.
So I pondered this dream, and what might have brought it on.
I've been following Ree's blog, "The Pioneer Woman", since back in the days when she only had about 50 comments a day and talked about calf nuts and panties a lot. (Not in the same entries, of course.) Honestly, I feel as though I know her, so that alone could have caused the dream.
Now, if you are one of those people who gag every time you see the words "Ree Drummond" or "Pioneer Woman", just move along. There's no need to leave a comment. You have your opinions, I have mine.
Back to the dream: I took an over-the-counter sleeping pill last night. I suppose that might have been responsible for the dream, although those pills don't usually cause me to dream.
And then I realized: Ree has a Christmas show coming up on Food Network this Saturday! Not only that, but she has a new cookbook ready that comes out on March 13.
She wants me to spread the word! Can you believe I'm getting subliminal messages from Ree Drummond? In my sleep?
Her show airs this Saturday at 11 A.M. central time, but it will be repeated a few times. Click HERE for all the times. To see what she as to say about her new cookbook, click HERE.
I'm not making it up about the dream. You know, they say if you tell a dream before breakfast, it will come true.
Just my luck.

Pioneer Woman on TV
Thanks to the DVR, I haven't missed a single episode of Ree Drummond's show on Food Network. Not only that, I've kept all but one episode on the DVR so I can watch them again. I didn't come up with this brilliant idea of keeping them until after I had deleted the first one. Obviously, I am a diehard Pioneer Woman fan.
I've never been a fan of cooking shows. At my age, I've accumulated all the recipes I'll ever need, and then some. And let's face it, Ree doesn't exactly cook health food. I've probably only tried three or four of the recipes in her cookbook, simply because of the high calorie content. It isn't her cooking that makes me love the cookbook or her show; it's the scenes from the ranch.
For instance, I finally got to hear Marlboro Man and the kids talking! I've read The Pioneer Woman blog for years, and seen all the pictures, but now I know what each member of the family sounds like. Watching Ree's show is like being invited to the ranch, only I don't have to worry about what to wear or how to act. Cliff, by the way, enjoys the show with me.
There are only two more episodes left, although I'm sure the whole series will be shown over and over again. Food Network might want her to do shows, and Ree may want to do more episodes. Time will tell.
Meanwhile, I hear she is working on another cookbook.
I do wish they'd put the TV episodes on the Internet for those PW fans who don't have satellite or cable. I guess we can't have everything.
I have not yet bought a copy of the book Ree wrote for children, "Charlie the Ranch Dog". I do intend to buy one, though. After all, I have a great-granddaughter.

Things were going so well, and then...
My friend Jessica has been gushing all over Facebook for months about a barbecue joint called Oklahoma Joe's. The more she talked about it, the more I wanted to try it. Problem is, both locations are an hour away from us, on the Kansas side of the Kansas City metropolitan area. I have suffered in silence all this time, but yesterday I broke the news to Cliff that I simply had to eat at Oklahoma Joe's to see what I was missing.
So today, we went. The Kansas City, Kansas, location is ten miles closer, but the Olathe one seemed like more of a direct route; the GPS gave the same travel-time to get to either one. We chose Olathe.
We arrived around 11:30 A.M. to see a line of people that reached almost all the way to the entry door. They have a very good system, though, for moving people along; so we weren't standing long. I got the Z-man sandwich my friend recommended; Cliff got a barbecue plate of sausage and brisket, with a side of beans.
We both loved the food. The regular barbecue sauce was as good as any I've had, and Cliff agrees. He tried the hot sauce; I took a tiny taste, but it was really too hot to suit me. Even Cliff, who likes hot, spicy seasoning, preferred the regular sauce.
When we left I was fulfilled and happy. We'd never drive that far again just to eat at Oklahoma Joe's, but if we were passing through to visit my brother-in-law at Elk City, Kansas, or if we were on our way to Colorado or points farther west, I'd pick up another sandwich like the one I had today.
We found a Dairy Queen and got a mini-blizzard for dessert, then stopped by the Walmart in Oak Grove to get a couple of Cliff's prescriptions and some groceries. That's where my mood changed.
Medicare Complete wouldn't pay for our prescriptions; they wanted us to submit to our "other" insurance.
We haven't had any other insurance since Cliff retired! And it seemed strange that they paid for the prescriptions we got for Cliff only two weeks ago.
A lady working in the pharmacy called Medicare Complete twice, and then came and told us we really needed to call them ourselves.
So we sat down on a bench at the pharmacy and did just that. We dealt with two different ladies at Medicare Complete, and they were both courteous and helpful. I was put on hold for about thirty minutes while one lady transferred me to another, and that was rather discouraging, mainly because I didn't know what the outcome would be.
It turns out Cliff's former employer contacted them within the last few days to notify them that he was insured with them. We can't figure out how that happened; I do know the oldest grandson just received his insurance card from the same employer, and we wonder if there was a mixup there: same last name, and similar address. If that's the case, I wonder if Arick's insurance will be cut off as a result of our mixup today.
All's well that ends well, but we sure did spend a lot of time in Walmart, talking on the phone. Whew. I have to say that the ladies at the pharmacy were patient and helpful, as were the ones we spoke with on the phone.
On a side note, I hope all the Pioneer Woman fans caught her new show on the Food Network last Saturday. Cliff watched and enjoyed it with me; he really likes Ree. I know she has her detractors, but Cliff and I are diehard fans. She comes across, we think, as REAL. We love the ranch scenes incorporated into the show, too. Sure she's rich. She deserves it. I hope she gets even richer.
So there.

Cheese
Hello. I'm Donna, and I'm a cheese addict.
I always tell people my favorite food is pizza, but that's mainly because of the amount of cheese on top of it.
I also love macaroni and cheese, made from scratch, baked in the oven; unfortunately, Kraft has created an entire generation of kids that prefer the kind from a box, with fake cheese. I'll admit I like that kind too, but I really loved the old-fashioned kind.
I am not, however, a cheese snob. I'm American cheese all the way, with perhaps some medium cheddar to nibble on as a snack. If I'm feeling really daring, I'll have a few bites of pepper jack.
Unfortunately, I made the mistake of looking at Pioneer Woman's cooking section the other day. I seldom look at that portion of her blog because it tends to make my arteries clog shut and my blood pressure climb... and that's just looking at the pictures!
I saw this recipe called "Fancy Macaroni". I've been able to think of nothing else for days.
Ree says, "Choose whatever four cheeses you'd like - sometimes it's fun to play around."
Then she goes on to say she is using Gruyere, Fontina, and Parmigiano Reggiano.
Folks, not only am I unable to pronounce those, I've never even heard of two of them.
Sam's Club has a huge selection of cheeses, so I decided while I was there to look for those exotic-sounding cheeses. Indeed, I found three of the four; the cost for each of them was about five dollars an ounce. Seriously! I did buy some real Parmesan (as opposed to the dry kind in the green box) because the price wasn't so bad on that, and we'll use it on spaghetti later on. Who knows, I might even let my daughter use some for lasagna if she agrees to invite us over to help eat it. And just to show I'm not afraid, I bought some Feta cheese (it wasn't so expensive).
I'm using Ree's recipe as a guideline for a supper dish tonight to go along with our meat loaf, but I'll be calling it "Not-So-Fancy Macaroni", because I'm using Feta, cheddar, and Parmesan cheeses. I'm also cutting the recipe in half; it makes far too much for me, Cliff and his sister. However, if it's good, I might make it at a later date for company.
I'll let you know how it turns out.

For those who love Pioneer Woman
I just happen to have in my possession an extra copy of "The Pioneer Woman Cooks", which is on the New York Times best seller list (hardcover advice category).
Oh, it isn't MY copy. The only way you're getting that away from me is to pry it out of my cold, dead hands when I'm deceased.
This is really more than a cookbook; if you love the Pioneer Woman's website, this is for you. Even if you have no plans of ever cooking again.
There are pictures of cows and horses and dogs and children. And cowboys. Pardon me while I have a moment of silence and reflection.
There's enough butter to send you into cardiac arrest. Don't blame me for that.
Here's the deal: If you enjoy P.W., just leave a comment telling me so. You can tell me why if you like, but it isn't necessary.
I don't have a huge readership, so I don't expect a lot of replies. I'll probably just write down all three or four entries on slips of paper and have Cliff draw one. If there should be more than I expect, I'll search out that random generator thingie that everybody uses for their drawings.
Very simple, very easy. You have until 6 P.M. on Christmas Eve to get your comment in.
(Did I mention it's autographed?)

Pioneer Woman does her second Bonnie Hunt Show
Yes, Ree was there again. She shared on Facebook, "Here's the Bonnie Hunt segment from Wednesday in case you missed my shiny forehead! This is the segment in its entirety...cowlick and all!"
I know not everybody follows her on Facebook, so if you're interested, you'll find the video HERE.

Good grief! And to think I "knew" her when.
I stole this picture from Pioneer Woman's site; I'm pretty sure that's OK, since I asked permission another time to steal a picture and she replied, "Oh, I don't care about that stuff. Go ahead and use it."This picture makes me glad I didn't go. Look at that crowd!
By the way, did you know Ree's cookbook is on the New York Times best seller list?
Two of my readers left comments saying they attended Ree's book-signing event. Thanks, ladies, for sharing.
Since I follow Pioneer Woman on Facebook, I was able to find bloggers who shared their PW-in-KC stories.
Coal Creek Farm (she lives out in the boonies of Kansas; I read her blog regularly.)
If you want a first-hand account of the activities of PW day in Kansas City, these are the blogs to read. They made me feel like I was there with them.

I wonder...
Did any of my Kansas City readers meet Pioneer Woman last night? I follow her on Facebook, and it looks like some people were still standing in line to get their books autographed at midnight! Must have been a great turnout. She had her husband (Marlboro Man) and boys with her.
Here are some comments made to PW on Facebook:
It was awesome to meet you! Thanks for visiting KC!
How late did you sign books? We left at like 11:30. I was in an earlier group with one of my friends, but another friend waited too long to get her book and was in the group at 11:15ish! We had a great time though. My 16 year old took the book to school today to use it for a recipe in her foods class (she wants to be a chef). (She was not there last night, I had to use tough love and not let her come even though she really really wanted to. . .)
you were as warm, genuine, and sweet in person as you are on your blog! thank you for stopping by.
Thanks P-Dub! It was great to meet you in person. You were funny and a pleasure to talk to.
LOVED IT! Thanks for coming to KC. It was a fun fun night.
Had a really great time and I love the cookbook!! Hope we see you on Oprah sometime soon!!
t was truly awesome meeting you, MM and the boys ....MM was so gracious with all of us women wanting him to sign our books and have pics taken with him...pls tell him thank you!!! And your boys were so so cute! They def "kept it real"!! Loved it and loved YOU....I drove 2.5 hrs and would do it again tonight if I could!!
Thank YOU Ree, Kate and I had an amazing time! Posting my photos from last night, I even got one of the boys UFC fight, LOL
If you were there, tell me all about it!

Pioneer Woman is coming to Kansas City!

(I stole this picture from her website... I hope she doesn't mind)
The Pioneer Woman is going on a tour with her cookbook, so if you're a fan, you might want to check HERE and see if she's coming to a book store near you. She says the list of towns she's visiting will be updated from time to time.
If you see her, tell her Granny Clampett said howdy.

Pioneer Woman
I discovered The Pioneer Woman some time back, and was immediately hooked. I spread the word to family and friends. Ree's funny, she's a good writer, and she takes wonderful pictures of horses and cattle and cowboys in Wranglers, which are just a few of my favorite things.
I seldom comment on journals that, like hers, get over 200 comments a day; I figure my little submission will be lost in the shuffle, and won't be read by either the journal author OR the readers.
But sometimes I simply have to put in my two cents worth.
So I noticed (thanks to my handy-dandy sitemeter) that when I comment over there at Ree's place, people come from her blog to mine. They usually don't stay long, by the way. Let's face it, after reading PW's stuff, my ramblings are pretty lame.
Anyhow: Hello to all you fans of The Pioneer Woman out there who clicked on my profile and came to visit. Isn't she great?
What would we ever do without her?
