I put on my coat and a stocking cap (it's blackberry winter, you know) at six o'clock this morning to go on my usual walkabout in the yard; I like to see if there are any new blooms on the flowers, look at the vegetable garden, and check out the weather situation.
I was surprised to find three ripe strawberries, which immediately made me think of my mother. She often told me how, when she was a kid, she looked forward to having strawberry shortcake on her birthday, May 21; the berries were nearly always starting to ripen by then. There might not have been enough strawberries for the whole family of seven, but there were usually enough for little Lola's birthday treat.
So I looked at the three strawberries in my hand and wished my mom a happy Mother's Day. Thanks, Mother, for all the stories you left behind.
